Shirley tells Oscar that Polly is arriving today to live
with them at Kowhai Corner. Shirley asks
Oscar if he could go and pick some guavas so they can have some for lunch.
Oscar is happy to pick guavas because it is a good reason to
climb the tree. He picks them and puts
them in the bucket.
He climbs down the tree and sits on the ground and eats a
few. He hears a rustle in the tree and sees Ted watching him. Ted tells Oscar he will take the guavas
inside to Shirley and tells him to go and get a pumpkin and cut it up for Shirley so
she can make some pumpkin soup for lunch.
Oscar goes to the garden and selects a pumpkin. He sits on it
and thinks I have picked the guavas and now I am to cut up the pumpkin. What has Ted done today?
Ted cuts out piece of pumpkin that he thinks will be the right size for Shirley. He doesn’t notice the two rats watching him who are waiting to collect the pumpkin seeds.Shirley thanks Oscar for the pumpkin piece and starts making the pumpkin soup. Knock, knock, "Oh, Oscar can you answer the door?" asks Shirley "I am busy cooking the pumpkin soup."
Oscar opens the door and sees Polly standing there. He invites Polly inside and takes her to meet Shirley and Ted.
Polly asks Shirley if she can have a bath because she feels dirty after her travelling. Shirley asks Oscar to stir the pumpkin soup while she takes
Polly to the bathroom and then shows her to her bedroom. Polly enjoys her bath while Oscar (who has been asked) sets the table for lunch.
Polly joins the Ted, Oscar and Shirley for a delicious lunch of pumpkin soup, a bread roll and guavas. After lunch Polly helps to clear the table and tells Shirley that she is tired and she is going to have an afternoon rest.
Polly gets into her bed and feels comfortable and falls asleep. (The poster is the other side of the Pumpkin Patch bag.)
Shirley washes the dishes and Oscar dries them and puts them in the cupboard. They both agree that Polly is a lovely girl and they will all get on well living together. Shirley thanks Oscar for helping her today and says Ted can help with the jobs that need doing tomorrow.
